while replacing water pump i must have moved the shift rod and it is not positioned in sync with the boat shift lever. (i.e. neutral on boat shift lever is not netural on motor). To synchronize is as simple as rotate shift rod to neutral and then reconnect to the split bolt linkage with lever in neutral. also when muffs are connected should upper pee stream hole at back of motor housing develop water. water comes out holes on lower unit but none at back of motor. also water coming from seam at top of lower unit seal. Is this a pump seal problem?

Welcome jdf!

Most shift rods will turn some during installation. Just turn it so it lines up with the shift lever connector. You can oprerate the engine shift lever to get the connector lined up.

Yes, when running on muffs, you should get a pee stream out of the tell tale. If you don't, just take a piece of wire and poke it up into the tell tale. Likely it's just plugged. You probably wont' get any out of the exhaust relief ports on muffs either. Thats' the holes up on the back of the midsection. But when in the water, you may get a misty spray from them.

Don't worry about water squirting out the mating line between the lower unit and midsection. You got water in there under pressure and it will squirt out the cracks.

If you have city / high water pressure at your hose.

Don't turn it wide open , just get a good steady flow.

The high pressure can make new leaks appear .

I had to replace a powerhead to adapter gasket that started leaking, from city water pressure.

Having lived in the country, with a well . That had far less pressure. I didn't think about it until too late.
