this may be helpful for others:
1986 60 Johnson. Never could get rid of a little water intrusion in LU despite change in seals and water pump. Finally did the "complete" job. this time replacing the shift-rod O-ring in the cover assembly.
The original factory O-ring was not the right size. Its inner donut-hole size was fine, but it's outer diameter was too small and did not fit tightly in the groove. The replacment one is visibly larger (and looks like no way it will fit in there) . But it does fit and this year at year-end take-out, my LU lube was water free.
