I've revomed the lower unit on my 1986 Johnson 200HP V-6 (200TXCD) to change the water pump. However, I neglected to note the orientation of the shift rod.
Does the bend at the top angle forward or backward?

Thanks - Geoff
Sometimes I will use needle nose pliers to adjust and turn that rod so the screw lines up with the hole. Midway on the engine you will find a small gap where the needl nose pliers will fit in and you can turn it there while your other hand is free to insert the screw.
