Shift rod placement, manual is no help,1991 200hp johnson

I purchased a manual and it takes you through how to disassemble and reassemble, but my problem is when I took off the foot to replace water pump I did not pay attention to the shift rod. The shift rod has a bend at the top, my question is do the bend go toward the front or the rear of the engine.

Shift rod bend goes forward.

Being retired, the latest entry in my database pertaining to the shift rod adjustment is as follows (1986/87 model) which may not pertain to your 1991 model. If not, I'm sure that someone will jump in here with a correction.

1986-87 - 200, 225hp Loop Charged = (L) 21-15/16" - - (XL) 26-15/16" plus/minus 1/32" Have the shift rod on these engines in neutral and facing forward.
