Like a dummy I let someone disconnect my shift rod from the bottom to change the impellers. Thought I had it all back together right but it wont go into reverse. How do I get it back in there correctly? I have tried everything but it will only go into forward and neutral It is a 1993 40 hp evinrude on a pontoon boat

they shift rod in threaded into the lower unit. it has to be adjusted to the right length(height). my disc drive is down so i cannot give you the height.

Re: shift Rod problems

I have taken the lower unit off of the motor and when I try to pull or push it to change gears it still will not go into reverse can that still be from the wrong adjustment even disconnected? I got the measurements from a different site it just seems like that would not matter when it was disconnected but maybe I am missing something. This is my first experience with outboard motors.

Re: shift Rod problems

my problem seems to be getting the forks into that cam inside there every time I try to put it in there it rolls over on me. Am I right thinking that those prongs ride down in the cam? Is there a secret to getting it back in there?
