shift rod removal and replace?

While cleaning top of lower unit still mounted to my boat, preparing to reinstall the rebuilt powerhead, I accidentally raised the shift rod. It didn't drop right back in but I wiggled it around for a few seconds and then it dropped back down. I haven't found anything in my shop manual about installing the shift rod, so I would like to ask before I go any further. When I removed the powerhead, I'm sure I had to swing it out of the way but I wasn't paying attention to notice if there was any resistance. Now that it is back down in and I move it, there doesn't feel like there is any type of resistance on it. Should there be? This is a 1986 4 cyl. 75 HP Mariner #A199493.

Did the same thing on a 115 hp inline myself.----------Put the shifter back down in the right place, ----No problems.-------But if you are not sure then the best thing is to drop the lower unit.-----Install the powerhead and hook up the controls.-------Put control in forward and lower unit in froward.----Install lower unit.

Honestly, I don't know that it was the same place where I removed it from. I might have moved it some to the left or right as it slid back into place? I guess what I am hoping to find out, is if there should be any resistance or something? I'm guessing there is a spline at the base that should slip into something? Did you notice any pressure as you turned it side to side? IF, I have put it back in place wrong, can it be fixed from below after I install the power head?

I would have to do a lot of typing to explain this.-----------Easiest for you is to follow the instructions in post #2 and nothing will break on re-assemly.----Will cost you no $$ to follow this advice.
