Shift shaft alignment

I just put a new water pump on my 82/84 200 merc. I want to make sure I have the shifta shaft lined up correctly before I have a big problem.<br /><br />In Forward, thd prop clicks clockwise and has resistance counter clockwise<br /><br />Neutral, prop spins freely<br /><br />In Reverese, the prop clicks counter clockwise and there is restance clockwise.<br /><br />Seems to me backwards but this is the only way everything shifts smoothly<br /><br />ANy help is appreciated
