Ok guys so I’m new here and to boats. I have a 1976 mercruiser 120hp runabout. I have recently done allot of work to the out drive, water impeller, bellows, upper shift cable, gimbal bearing list goes on. Well recently I dropped the out drive for some work and also did the water pump. I put the lower unit on and then the whole drive assembly and not I can’t get my shifter to get out of neutral and into either forward or reverse it’s stuck in neutral position. So that’s when I found my upper cable was jacked up so I replaced it and still in the same predicament. So I was told my shift shaft could have gotten misaligned. If this is true how can I go about fixing the issue. Trying to get on the water this weekend. Any help would be much appreciated

You were already in fwd to remove and install the drive. So were you in Fwd? Take the drive off and inspect for any damage to the brass shift shoes. Shift into full fwd, the brass shoe will be in a straight line. Shift drive into full Fwd ,brass shoe will be in a straight line. Prop will be locked CCW in Fwd. Install drive turning the prop CCW about and in ch to line up the splines, drive should push on to within an 1/8 inch
