Hey guys I have a 1968 mercruiser 120 with an alpha 1 outdrive. I am going to replace the shift cable while I am replacing the gimbal bearings and bellows. I have read on here that I need to convert the old shift cable and tap the other side of the bell housing for the new cables. Now to the question: I have found cables for sale that say the are forward installation into the bell housing. Can I use them instead of doing the whole tap thing?

Here are the descriptions of the cables:
1.for forward installation into bell housing;has new style armored strand construction;no support tube;54 inch conduit;w/hardware package

2.for forward installation into bell housing;has old style stranded core wire w/soldered tip;uses support tube;63 inch conduit

Thanks for the help guys

Ayuh,.... #1 sounds like a better cable, 'n easier to install, than #2....

Donno,... Don't remember the last time I saw a 1968....;)
That's a Mod.1, or MC-1 drive...
Alpha 1 was 83 or so...

Re: Shift Shaft Forward/Aft question

Would I still have to tap the bell housing to use one of these cables?
