Shift shaft lever installation - allignment?

I'm about to put my drive back on after replacing all of my bellows. The exhaust bellows required the removal of the shift shaft so that you can access the inside of the bellows to pull them on.

I can't remember which way the shift lever was oriented! It has a hole through it, so I can only be 180-degrees off :). Is the piece that engages the shift assembly on the drive supposed to be pointing backwards, or forwards?

Can't find any pictures or description in the books or in a search... but seems like it can go either way (although one way wouldn't engage the drive when I put it on).

Thanks!
