when putting on the lower unit on my 1982 merc 80hp how is it best to tell when shift shaft and mercontrol are all in the same postion/gear. is shift shaft in neutral when it is in the middle position. ie. it will rotate a little to the port and to the starboard? any advice would be appreciated

Re: shift shaft orientation

on some there is 2 neutrals, so a gear position is better. manual says use forward, others prefer reverse. reverse, prop in gear one way and free wheels the other way

Re: shift shaft orientation

I had to change the gear's and cam shifter in mind yestreday, it is an older
model 1965 Mercury 100 hp. I placed the shift cam in forward, and shifter in forward to reinstall, being the lowest part on the cam. (it ratchet's forward, in reverse it lock's forward and reverse when turning prop by hand)
