Shift shaft Rubber seal placement on 1995 Evenrude 88SPL?

HI all,

Just put my leg on after LU seals and impeller kit..I have the large round rubber "Seal" that goes on the upper shift shaft. the OMC Manual (which is great) says to place around the shaft, under the housing....No Pic, and not real clear. Does this simply sit on top of the steering tube, below the housing? Tthe recess immediately under the shroud wont accommodate its circumference, so It wold drop to that point anyway i believe.

The manual does say this rubber prevents "spray" from going up and hitting the crankcase.

Can someone steer me right?

It just sits on top of the steering arm and goes around the shift rod. That's the reason there's a slot in it so you can install it.

Thanks Boobie....Yea, makes sense. I was trying to get it to stay up the shaft, under the cowling-covering the round hole. But its in place as it should be.

Thanks Todd, you've always been so helpful to me...Glad i'm not the only one to ask such questions. Sometime things seem so obvious, other times I havent a clue!!
