can anybody tell me the procedure for replacing the shift shaft seal in a 1993 alpha 1. Do i have to pull the leg off or just take the lower half off? Also , i had a dealer replace it for me last year but it still leaks. they told me that the plastic housing that the seal fits into probably needs replacing as well. I want to fix this myself this time but i am a little unsure whats involved. I have removed the leg and replaced before myself with no problems. So any input would be great Thks.

Hello
is this an alpha one or an alpha one gen II
?
I assume by the plastic housing comment it is a gen II

Re: shift shaft seal

fozz, you have an alpha gen2.drop just the lower unit .replace the shift shaft bushing assy.complete, don't try to replace just the seal.the bushing assy has the seal already installed in it .2 bolts hold the bushing assy in place.when you reinstall the shift shaft turn it clockwise as viewed from above and then turn the propshaft counter clockwise to lock into forward gear.the shift shaft is properly set when it points straight forward{observe this before disassembly of the shift shaft bushing}good luck!

A suggestion is to get a manual.
Yes watch out for the little o-ring that seals the oil passage,it gets lost an not noticed untill all back together and the gear lube leaks out the side

While in there you might as well change the water pump impeller.

Rich

You will need a special tool to remove the Bushing that houses the shifter seal.

TMD

Re: shift shaft seal

on a gen 2 the shift shaft bushing is held in with 2 bolts.a 5/16 wrench or socket will fit the bolts.
