Shift Shaft Slide Stabilizer Tool

Hi All - <br /><br /> I have promised a good friend of mine a water pump rebuild and a gimball bearing/spline grease job this spring in return for some favors. He has a 1998 Mercruiser 3.0L with an Alpha One Generation II.<br /><br /> I have done this job on my own boat (1987 Mercruiser 3.0L with an Alpha One)in the past. I noticed a difference between our service manuals: The shift shaft slide stabilizer tool.<br />Is this necessary for the Generation II Alpha Ones? Or should I be able to perform the job the same as I have with my older outdrive?<br /><br />Thanks in advance for your comments!!<br /><br />Jeff

its the same operation, the tool helps keep the slide from moving, or so they say. I have never used it personally.<br />water pump is a bit different but the kit has instructions.
