Shift/throttle problem

I have a 1995 Four winns 258 Vista with 7.4 L OMC cobra. The shift/throttleseems to have a long throw, in forward and reverse, between the point at which I can hear the gear engage until I can increase the power from idle. It seems to take some distance of the handle before the throttle engages.

It also seems to be fairly stiff, requiring a fair amount of force, especially as compared to my 1992 27 ft Maxum.

Suggestions?

Re: Shift/throttle problem

I have a similar problem with an 89 180 horizon 4.3 liter. Except that sometimes when i give it throttle fast it kills, I have to gradually give it gas. But once it gets going its fine, its just the first hour or so of driving. I'm wondering if its a faulty throttle.

Re: Shift/throttle problem

Since you have a 95 Cobra, that should be the SX style drive and not have a lower shift cable.
The cables could be just worn out and binding internally, possibly tied down too tight near the control not allowing the cables to move up and down while shifting which will cause the bind.
Improper adjustment or the cable in the wrong holes in the control will also cause your lack of responce to the throttle.
