I have an 88 larson 18 foot with a 4.3 and OMC stern drive. I was on the lake and it lost reverse and was stuck in forward i got it off the lake and pulled the lower unit. It looks like I am going to need a special tool or something?!?! Anyhelp would be highly appreciated.

Its not the size that matters, right?

Hi notinbig, with the outdrive off look up under the housing you will see the cable there is a nut that the cable runs thur 11/16 or 3/4 nut loosen that and disconnect both ends of the cable and than it will slide out very easy to replace, replace it with the red cable they last alot longer good luck

i hope your shift cable nut is easier to get out than mine. 78 larson w/Merc OD. nut is on the boat side of the drive. deep well socket with a groove machined in it to clear cable. brass nut in so tight, socket slipped on corners. tried pipe clamp at end of socket, still slipped and started to round off corners. i just left it in place, did not need to replace cable for bellows replacement. the nut on the outside must be easier to get loose. are you sure that this is the problem?

thanks for the help. yea i can see and grab the cable but when i try to loosen the brass nut on the inside the outer slide spins with it, that slide i can't get to stay put to loosen that nut. I tried pliers and they started to mare the slide.

How did you do it?

Did you use my crude method of holding the nut with a wrench and turning the entire pivot unit around it? Or, did you find an easier method?

Re: shifter cable at lower unit

when I removed lower unit and removed the lever and slide I put a 3/4 inch on the boat side and loosened it on my back. when I put the new cable in I had to spin the cable not the nut to tighten. and as far as getting the lower unit back on, holy crap fest, it was hell and its still not on. I took it to a dealer to have the lower unit installed and cable adjusted. haven't heard what the cost is yet.
