So I'm very new to boats and outboard. I just started to restore a 1963 Hydroswift with the original 75 hp Johnson outboard. When i bought the boat it did not have the shifting control. Im trying to find one but i dont know which one i need. Is it the Hydro-Electric? Thank so much for any help!

Re: Shifter Control for 1963 75hp Johnson

Um...well the first queston is does it have electric shift or manual shift? The manual shift has a shifter lever on the starboard side of the motor.

Manual shift uses a two-lever remote control.

If electric shift, 1963 would be Electramatic. The shift switch is different than the Hydro-Electric. If you attempt to use the wrong shift switch, it will destroy some $$$expensive parts.

Second question: Do you have the electric junction box and cables? The one for the Electramatic will cost you some more big $$$$ bucks.

If it's electric shift, it would be Electramatic. Here's a link to one on Ebay:

The auction says its a hydro-electric, but it is actually a Selectric (or Electramatic). If it's mechanical shift, there will be a shift lever on the starboard side of the motor. That motor takes a standard 2-lever control like this one:
