Shifter not shifting

Hello all,

Re manufactured 350 engine. Runs great. Serviced out drive and changed the impellar. Mercruiser Alpha1. Set the shift cable and remote cable as per the OEM #6 manual. If I stop engine I can put it into forward or reverse, but it won't come back to neutral or go into another gear. I have to turn off engine and restart it and I can get into the other gear. I have read the manual 4 or 5 times and I think I am doing it right, but obviously I am doing something wrong. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Jim

FYI..... The shift interupter kills the engine for a split second when shifting back to neutral from either F or R. It does not kill motor when shifting from neutral into either gear.

Re: Shifter not shifting

The service manual has a procedure for testing/adjusting the interrupter switch (which is basically a micro-switch). You just need an ohmmeter or continuity tester. It should make contact when the plastic wheel is 1/8" away from the Y-plate (sorry, that may not be the correct name of the thingy). Mine was closing at 1/4" and was really making shifting out of gear more of an art than a science. Had to wiggle the control stick this way while holding your mouth that way.

Maybe your control box needs some attention. And why do you have two posts that are the same?

Because I put it in the wrong forum and posted here, told them to delete the other , but they just moved it I guess. Think I found the problem. Set screw came lose on the shift cable. Hopefully that will do it. Will test it this afternoon or tomorrow.
