Shifter prob? Hard to find nuetral-165merc

JUST PURCHASED-1979 Bonanza- 165 I-6 Merc , shifter has knob you pull out for nuetral ,does not seem to be going into N(shifter does not feel looser as it should when in nuetral) - also when I did get it to go into N would grind when going into fwd & rev and sometimes die when put into rev.- SHIFTER ADJUSTMENT OR REPLACE - OR SHIFT CABLE ADJUST/REPLACE- OR SHFT SOLENOID CUT-OUT SWITCH FOR IGNITION ?? PLEASE HELP --THANK YOU - TJ

Thanks , but I was hoping to see what could be checked to determine what exactly problem is-also the button that I pull out on shifter is to disengage outdrive ?<br />All help on this greatly appreciated - TJ NEWBY
