I have a 1986 75HP Merc 4 cylinder. My shift control allows me to shift into gear without having to squeeze the trigger. I don't have a manual yet and am not sure what's inside the handle. Easily fixed, or replacement needed?

It was like this when I got the boat. No big deal except when I leaned over to grab the dock, my big gut kicked it into forward. OOPS!

Dan

In the handle, on the top a cap that retains the part of the grip thats the release and a spring that operates the catch, running down the inside of the handle a heavy wire that operates the release pin that goes into a washer that hold the lever in neutral, the most you would need to do is remove the handle for repair a simple task, you will need a allen wrench to remove the handle (hole in the bottom of the handle when in neutral) and a phillips screwdriver
