I have a year 2000 carborated merc. 5.7 with an alpha 1 gen II. I'm having trouble shifting into forward and reverse. My controls are the single lever type with the button in the center. I can move the throttle forward and reverse when the button is engaged, like reving the engine in nuetral. I unhooked the shifter cable and the throttle cable from the shifter and they both move freely. I replaced them anyway and still have the problem. Do control boxes wear out? What is a good replacement brand shifter? I would need one with tilt, trim, and hopefully a trailer button if I have to replace the whole shifter. Or is this something that can be fixed inside the shifter assembly?
