Shifting and Steering

Boat: 1992 596zp Stingray, motor 431A, Lower unit 290DP.

I have noticed as of late that when I shift either into fwd or rev that unless my steering wheel/ lower unit is almost straight it is very stiff and sometime impossible to shift from neutral or back to if in gear?

All my years of wisdom (I have none) tell me the cable must be going bad.

Could it be anything else, should I check anything else, is there a way to check the cable to make sure?

Replace the shift cable.
