1978 OMC800 stringer. Pulled the outdrive to rebuild the waterpump. After replacing the outdrive the shift points have moved so far from the center position on the converter box that the engine begins to build rpm's before the forward gear engages. If I try to put it in reverse it chatters without fully going into gear. The book gives a MINIMUM distance between shift points on the converter box but doesn't mention anything about a MAXIMUM. What's going on? Do I have to pull the outdrive and replace the shift cable? Why would it change?
