I just took my boat out for the first time this year, and I noticed that the drive was having trouble shifting into reverse. It would not engage until I throttled up the engine a bit, making what sounded like gears grinding. Then while shifting back into neutral the engine would die. I am aware of the shift cut off switch which I checked and it works properly the shift cables were out of adjustment causing the engine to die. I readjusted the cable and now the motor doesn't not cut out but I am still having trouble shifting into Reverse. Could this still be a shift cable adjustment issue, or possible something else. Also my manual says to check the transmission fluid but I cannot find a dipstick. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Shifting Gears

I know on my sx out drive there is a big bolt on top of the leg about a 17mm with a slot that you could open it with a flat head srcew driver. that is the gear oil dip stick..

you may have no oil in it..is it hard shiftin?
