Hi All;
So I got the engine alinged, (Thanks for all the help with that)outdrive installed, and cables hooked up. I'm haveing a little problem with the shifting, here is the situation;

I start the engine by depressing the throttle button to disengauge the quadrent, give it a couple of pumps, set the throttle between neutral and full forward, and start it up. runs great.

When I proceeed to bring the throttle back to the neutral position, the throttle button snaps out, and the engine dies.

I followed the manual in adjusting the cables for shifting, everything is hooked up and tightened.

Wondering if anyone had any ideas, as to what is the cause and fix.

Thanks for any help

Cheers
Tom

Re: Shifting Help

You will definitely get more replies ,but it sounds like a bad lower shift cable to me.Cable is binding making shift interrupt stall engine.

Re: Shifting Help

Thanks for the reply, the lower shift cable is new. I'm hoping it is just out of adjustment.
I'm at work now, but when I go home I'm going to have a look at the shift interupt mechanism. I'm thinking the roller should be in the "valley" when the lever is in neutral position. Any ideas if this is right?

Thanks
Tom

If you are simply going out of the "throttle only" position on your shifter and it dies when the throttle only button pops out, I doubt it is your shift cable. Just to be sure, have someone watch the shift interrupt switch to see if it is engaging when this happens. It almost sounds like something wrong in your controller causing a short or something. Or perhaps simply an engine that needs tuned up.

OOPS, didn't catch that - neutral to neutral shifting......

+1 for COMPLETE tune up.

Re: Shifting Help

This fourm is fantastic! I went home yesterday, observed the shift interupt while moving the throttle, with and without the throttle button pushed in. All looked well.

I started the engine with a couple of pumps and throttle slightly forward, ran like a top. As I moved the throttle towards neutral it started to die, moved the throttle slightly forward and the RPM's regained to about 650. Thinking about the tune up suggestion, I bumped the idle up slightly to see if I keep the motor running. Well that was it, Throttle is in neutral and RPM is set to spec.

I think my mistake is I set up the engine timing and RPM with the throttle slightly forward. which would give me a decrease in RPM's when I throttled to neutral.

Works like a top, shifts forward and reverse nice and smooth.

Thanks to all for the help.

Cheers:)

Idle spec is for an engine in gear IN THE WATER, so if you did it in the driveway, then yes it woud be off a little.

Re: Shifting Help

Not sure what RPM you were at when you set your timing but I would recheck that.
