1981 galaxy, 1981 165 merc inline 6cyl, 1978, 165 mec outdrive. i attemped to set automatic choke with the hand shifter, you pull it out to disengauge gears and then you move the shifter forward all the way to engauge, well when doing this something slipped and the shifter now when in the nuetral is in a different position, can someone explain to me what happened and how it happened, i was able to get it back in the proper position somewhat but not quiet.when this happened i noticed the screw that holds the shifter in place was very lose,so i adjusted the shfter a little and tightened the screw up snug and was able to go on, but i dont know what caused this to happened .thanks george.

Re: shifting issue

not to sure how to explain the one i have , its just a tee top handle if thats what your asking for.there is a screw that holds it into place ,that screw had somehow got real lose and when i pulled the shifter out to set the choke it slipped outa position so i fiddled with it and got it back into place . seams to be working alright now but it was a very interesting few minutes, lol .

Re: shifting issue

The control handle should be on splines. It is adjustable.
A drop of Loctite Blue on the screw will keep it from vibrating loose again..
