I was on the lake the other day investigating a bogging problem. I put the boat in reverse and gassed it kinda like pulling off the trlr. Afterward it would not come out of reverse. I thought I was going to have to reverse all the way back to the dock. Finally got it out of rev but would not change gears properly after that. Now it will not go into reverse and goes in fwd by itself when I rev the motor a tad (1000-1200 rpms). It won't come out of fwd unless I put it in rev. (no neutral) then into neutral.

In my garage I took off the cowling and disconnected the cable and manually shifted the gears. I felt the detent clicking but it was not changing gears.

I dropped the lower unit and shifted manually with shift rod. No dentent click. In fact it was as though it was not attached to anything. removed the housing and shift rod assembly and it is not attached to anything and I cannot tell from the manual (Seloc) or the images how to get it back in.

Re: Shifting Issues

After a bit more reading in the manual I have (actually Clymer) I found the install process. This unit will need to come apart.
