Shifting Linkage

I have a 69 johnson rope start longshaft and I recently have a problem with it going out of gear and no reverse. I got to looking around and found something missing...I think. The shift lever has a hole in the bottom middle of it and looks like an ajustment plate behind the lever? It looks as if the bolt may have wiggled out in thats why its haveing these problems. Im not sure but think that could be it?

Are you looking behind the access plate halfway down the leg? It's about 1.5" by 0.5" And behind it is the shift linkage held together with 2 screws, if one has fallen out it will not shift properly or at all. If you replace these screws make sure they are the exact same or the little hole will strip.
