shifting problem

I need some help, I had to replace my lower unit. and the shifting cables are not right. I put the controller in neutral, and when I turned the shifting rod to find neutral on the lower unit, the shifting rod was all the way back touching the motor block when it went into neutral. it can't go any farther to go into reverse. I need to know what to do to fix this, do I need to pull the shifting rod up and turn it a little and put it back down on the lower unit splines, will this give it more movement. that is what I'm thinking, but don't know for sure, if anyone knows for sure it would save me a lot of time and trouble. and thanks in advance for any info.

Re: shifting problem

What motor are we working on? For most models, neutral should be about in the middle of the shifter slider track. Normally you set the gearcase to neutral and install the upper shift rod to it at about the 1/2 way point, and adjust cable clamp from there.

thanks for the reply, I already got it fixed, had to drop the lower unit, and put the unit in neutral, and place the controller up front in neutral as well. then bolted the unit back up and adjusted the cables to fit the connecting bolts, and it works great.
