I haven't been able to adjust my linkage so reverse works. When I adjust the cable linkage so reverse works then forward doesn't! The gears grind and the throttle increases so it does't engage. When I re-adjust so forward works, I get the same symptoms in reverse. I wonder if it is more than a linkage adjustment? It is a 1977, 4- cylinder 85 HP Evinrude engine with mechanical shifting.
John.

John..... Disconnect the shift linkage at the engine, then shift the engine by hand. This will tell you if the problem exists with the engine (lower unit) or with the remote control assy.

Re: Shifting problems-85HP Evinrude

Dear Joe,
Thank you for your prompt reply. I have done this before and it seemed to work OK by hand. I will try again. I replaced the cable last year as the adjusting knurrled knob was broken. The slim part of the knob fits in the space devoted to it (below the accel adjust knob-covered by an "s" bracket with one screw) but it is "sloppy". Could this be the problem? Is there any way I could make it a tighter fit and still allow for turning and adjustment?

Feel free to e-mail me directly at campjung@cs.com

Thanks so much!! :D
