Shifting problems with 275A

So let's start a new topic with this. I'm having a problem with shifter or gears. The sterndrive is 275A. Usually the gear just sticks and I can't get it back to neutral. I've checked the cable and it seems to be ok.

I'm pretty sure that the problem is in the upper gear housing, that I have also checked (removed, cleaned the and replaced the oil seal in the eccentric piston etc. - in my repair manual it was told that debris would cause problem there) but after all that it still seems sticky trying it manually. I tried adding some washers with the shims in the piston screw which pushes the shift shoe and it seemed to work a little better, but that seems to be a bad idea (Don promised to tell me why?). Now the shims added with the washer are twice as thick as it used to be. Can it harm the gear shift mechanism?

Are there any suggestion or anything else I could do? What parts to check or replace? Is this typical problem with this drive?

-Hannu

Re: Shifting problems with 275A

Too many shims will make it hard to shift, too few could damage the cone and shift shoe.
That is why there is a section in the manual on how to adjust it so it will shift properly. Do you have the Volvo manual for your drive?

How did you check the cable. Just unhooking it from the drive and moving ths shifter won't tell you anything. It may be that the cable is binding internally when there is back pressure on the cable. Disconnect the cable end from the drive and hold the and try to resist the movement of the shifter. Have someone slowly move the shifter. If they feel your resistance, replace the cable. You shouldn't be able to provide enough resistane by hand to be felt at the control.

Re: Shifting problems with 275A

Thanks, I cheked the cable by unhooking it from the back and also I was able move the cable manually from the back too. But maybe some additional stress to the system can do the trick. I'll have to check that.

You seem to be pretty persistent, that the shifting problems are usually in cables, so it seems that there is not that many faults in the actual gear change mechanisms?

My manual is Clymer's Volvo Strendrive shop Manual for all sorts of Volvo engines and drives, but I don't trust that too much. Sometimes the models/diagrams/instructions don't match to parts and so on.

Anyway the manual tells just to put the shims there one at a time until the shaft can be rotated. Is there anything else to that?

-Hannu

check your vertical shaft clearance. if its excessive it will also cause poor/sticky shifting.maybe don could give you the spec for clearance under the top nut. if its excessive its likely a dished brass keeper. holds the colletts on on the bottom of the top box vertical shaft.
