1971 chrysler 35 hp.

i have new cables and remote unit.new water pump and lower unit seals.this is a new motor for me so i have no idea as to its condition prior to me.
the problem is i have neutral and forward ok but no reverse.it just grids but wont engfage.after ajustments then i have reverse and neutral but no forward.also the throttle increases before the non working gear attempts to engage.with the motor off it will lock into both gears by hand.but with motor running it wont.idle speed it set as low as i can get it.everything is tight.i,ve ajusted the cables and ends, the threaded coupler on the shift rod,set neutral so many times,i'm just lost.as i said this is a new motor for me so i have no idea if this is an exsisting problem or something new.
i've heard clutch dog mentioned in other posts.could this be the problem.i've already checked the pivot screw in the gear case.

yes i have a manual and have checked everything mentioned in it.

Re: shifting problems

Its kind of a long shot, but not being familiar with you particular control box, it might be worth checking out.

Is it possible that the shift cable and throttle cable were swapped, either at the motor, or in the remote control? Thus giving you throttle before shifting, and only two positions for the shifter.

Re: shifting problems

good thought but i checked that already.my remote box is a single lever with the engine warm up switch(just allows only throttle).i did find some slop in the levers and took care of that.

to clarify the problem,it does shift before throttle, however to make forward work right, reverse begins to throttle up before its fully engaged.and i run out of cable before it completley engages.if i adjust to make reverse right then the same problem exists with forward.i dont seem to have a medium adjustment.

Re: shifting problems

What kinda' control box is it? Some of the Morse and Tele-Flex boxes have more than one hole or hook up connection to put the control cables to. Did you get instructions with the box?

Re: shifting problems

its a oem chrysler remote box and cables.i got it from e-bay.it seems like theres alot of travel on the lever on the power head.more than what the cable can give.even if i unhook the throttle cable it still wont go into reverse without alot of grinding and clunking.i'm trying to avoid tearing apart the gear case again if this is a problem elsewhere.hopefullly someone has encountered it before.there was a post in the archives from 2 years ago with the same problem but no solution was offered.

Re: shifting problems

Hello rsharer. I have a 45 hp chrysler and I believe the tower and shifter are the same. Do this. Measure the distance the shifter travels from complete forward to complete reverse. On mine it is 3.5 inches. I attached a link to a picture of my shift linkage. shift linkage
When in neutral the shift linkage should be perfectly vertical. The linkage I am refering to is the one the shift cable is attached to. If this is correct for yours here is how you adjust the shift linkage going to the lower unit
Remove six bolts and nuts to remove motor leg covers
There is a nut about 2 inches long. One side has reverse threads. you need to adjust this so that the prop spins freely in both directions without any clicking. You should go both ways till you get a clicking sound and find the exact center position between going both ways.

Good luck

Re: shifting problems

I had the same problem. It is the main linkage behind that is under the covers by the water output. You have to adjust those so that it pushes the linkage and makes the arm that looks like brass line up with the safety stopper. Hard to explain. Anyway, adjust the linkage with the 2 inch nut and adjust the other vertical cable linkage at the motor. It'll set up. It is definitely not your clutch dog or any problem in the lower end gears. It is only a simple adjustment at the cable end or the vertical linkage.

Re: shifting problems

thanks for the input.i,ve done all that.dont know if it,s correct or not though.i ran into some other people with similar hp's and years and have the same problem.one guy said ,on his its the clutch lever in the lower unit with too much slop.
i,ve also noticed some slop in the shifter control.so if i got slop in the control box and the lower unit ,well it will never work right.anyway this is just a temporary motor.its really not enough for my needs.but it keeps me on the water until i get to fixing the bigger one.( a mercury)dont boo!so for now i just run without reverse.i just have to come into dock slower and avoid the shoreline.
