Shifting problems

I have a 1978 Evinrude 115. The shifter will not come out of forward into neutral. I have popped the cable attachments from the motor and control box. The engine itself will shift into all gears fine, so my issue is with the shifter.

I replaced the shift/throttle cables a few years back so I have worked on the system before. whatever is stopping the mechanism is solid, the leaver will come almost strait up but hits something hard.

Is something simple wrong here? Any advice or things to check?

thanks

open the control and see whats blocking it. there are replacements on ebay for reasonable $. probably bushing or a screw has come loose. could be neutral safety switch. find out whats wrong, i have a couple of shifters for parts.

Re: Shifting problems

Got the box apart last night, and found a small piece of the plastic bushing broken off and jammed in the ball detent mechanism. The sticky grease kept it there. Dooh!!

Thanks for the help.
