shifting question for replacement drive

So I bought a sei lower unit bolted everything together And bolted it to the boat. I did a shifting check. In reverse the prop is locked either way I turn the prop by hand. In forward the drive only locks when I spin it in reverse, but free spins in forward.

To me that's sounds like I have to adjust the red cable till it grabs for forward in both directions.

Can someone help me put and explain what I'm not doing or need to do?

Is an 1986 sea swirl spyder sport 178 with a Chevy 350 and a omc cobra

No I did not adjust the height of the shift rod. Is that something I was suppose to do?

My understanding is that in reverse, it should only lock spinning the prop forward.

I just bought an sei109 also, the shaft was not adjusted to 7 13/64" out of the box and if you didnt adjust it youll need to split the case and do that to get it to shift right. The prop should lock in place and not ratchet at all in forward and reverse.

Also get the adjustment tools to set the bell crank and cable length, there worth it to not have waste time fiddling with trying to adjust the lower cable.

They dont have a se109 specific forum but they seem pretty willing to help with there stuff at http://sterndrive.cc/vbforum/index.php

no i did not adjust the shift rod, kinda thought it was preset... cuz that is what i was told.... 7 13/64" from the plate to the bottom of the v piece or to the center?

I'm gonna be pissed AF if i have to drain the oil and split the case after i got it on there already.

I'm trying to use their forum under the SE300 section but all post have to be approved by a mod and no one is approving the post

Top of the actual outside drive case (not the cover the shift rod goes through) to the flat top of the peice with v in it. They make a tool to set on the case and adjust up to but i found it just as easy to use a straitedge and a ruler with 64ths. Book says +-1/32nd.
I think most of the adjustments are covered at http://www.midnight-wolf.com/OMC_Ins...tructions.html

They should have told you to do this first; in setting up a Cobra this is the first setting and if it's off none of the other adjustments will be right because you be getting too much throw in one gear and not enough in the other.

i got it shifting correctly. I disconnected the shift cable pulled the arm into forward and the shifter into forward. i adjusted the cable so it was in the middle without any slack then checked Neutral and Reverse.

I called SEI and they said they set the height from factory and i should have to touch it. they said it could be the pieces in the bell housing no being set correctly or stuff blocking the throw there. I cleaned all that and packed it full of water proof grease before i put the stern drive back on the boat. after getting every thing shifting correctly i also coated the rods and linkage ends with a little grease
