I have a 89 sunbird with a 4.3 cobra. Not all the time but it goes in spurts, when I shift from neutral to forward and start to give it gas it's sputters. I pull back and slowly give it more it gas it clears up and goes. I've heard people talk about the interrupter. How do I test that? And can I adjust it? From what I've read it sounds like that's my problem.

If by interrupter you mean the ESA....doesn't sound like that's your problem. It functions when you shift OUT of gear. A stutter at initial throttle up could be several things. I would start with a FULL tune up and filter change. If that doesn't solve things check the fuel system....fuel pick up, check valve, possibly rebuild carb if you know it hasn't been done in years. The "Adults Only" section should be a huge help.

Good Luck

You can always unplug the power to the ESA and see if the problem goes away. Just you will have a hard time getting in and out of gear. Atleast it will eliminate that possibility.
