shifting woes need help alpha 1

ok so i had out drive off and apart put in new pump . i think the linkage when in wrong and also think the set up in the boat (shift plate was all wrong )
currently have bottom end off and cable off plate
I need to know should the cable be pulled all the way out and the lower in gear so prop doesnt turn counter clock then re assemble

Inside the boat the cable must be pushed in for forward. Make sure you rotate the shift splines clockwise and chalk the prop CCW.

Do yourself a big favor and remove the complete drive. When assembling the units, the splined shaft in the lower is rotated fully clockwise and the brass shoe in the upper is in a straight line.With the cable removed from the shift plate you could push the cable too far inward
