do i have to take motor apart. i know cars inside and out but nothing about outboards. thanks dave

if your talking about the actual rod, you have to take off the lower unit.its like 8 bolts. might as well order a water pump kit too and change your gear oil. you have to take the water pump off, its easier to replace with it off. good time for a little maintenance.

Replacing the shift rod will require removing the guts of the lower end. If you haven't bought a Clymer Force Outboard Shop Manual, you need to before starting this job.

My force shift rod un-threaded from the lower end. Unless we are talking about an internal shift shaft of some sort. the rod im referring to runs through the water pump base and threads into the linkage in the lower end. no dissection needed except the water pump and base.
