Johnson 150,88 model#J150TLCDC, last fall, pulled the lower unit to replace the water pump, re-installed lower unit yesterday, and now it wont shift either to forward or reverse. Droped the lower unit back out, my question is this, should you be able to move the shift lever while turning the drive shaft, and if so, how much effort to move said shifter. Was working great before. All seems to be fine as far as the cables and throttle housing. I put some pressure on the shift lever to try to get it to move up or down but not sure how much pressure it takes. Help please.
Eddited to add, replaced the gear oil while the unit was removed, no water in the old oil.

Re: shiftless

If you take the spark plugs out you should be able to rotate the flywheel easily [clockwise]. This should enable you to move the shift rod up and down without much effort. Disconnect the shift cable. Once you have assured yourself that the gears are engaging properly, adjust the shift cable to the shift arm and then reconnect.

If you have turned the shift rod, you will have to reset it to the correct length before replacing the gearcase.

Re: shiftless

Thanks for the replies, I found the bad boy and took care of it. right behind the water pump is a box with six screws and a brass bushing to guide the shift shaft. Well that puppy was all coroded and the shift shaft was frozen to the bushing. A couple shots of WD and finally got the shaft to turn back and forth. Steady working the WD in there and finally got the cover loose enough to come up. A little emery and some Molly-B grease and we are good to go. That shifter works slicker than sn-t on a door knob.
Ya-ll have a great day. Al
