I have a belt chirp on my VP 5.7 GSi caused by the pulley on my new alternator being approx 1/4" out of alignment with the other pulleys on my serpentine belt. I would like to remove the alternator pulley and shim it out with about three stainless washers, them tighten it back on. Would this work OK, or can it cause an imbalance or put undue pressure on the shaft? Thanks.

Yes, alternator is marine rated, purchased at my local VP dealer. There is no fore and aft adjustment on the bracket

Some do have a shim behind the pulley, If they changed the pulley they must have missed it. Perhaps they haven't sent the old one back for rebuilding yet, and they have the spacer. If it came with the pulley installed, It should have one. Using washers may work, I've never tried it myself. It shouldn't hurt the strength of the shaft, not sure about balance though.
