shimming top cap / lower gear housing?

hi there.
Noticed my lower gear housing wasn't sitting snugly under the upper gear housing and the very large o ring / seal was quite loose.
Would i be right in thinking that the stern drive top cap (4 bolt) needs to be shim'd upwards as this is the only way to make these two meet?

I have done this and it has helped but exhaust fumes are still getting out the meeting point of the upper and lower gear casing, probably because the seal is knackered.

I am worried that shimming this way will cause too much pressure somewhere.... but as far as i can tell... the top plate with the 4 bolts, when raised, will only draw up the exhaust housing and the attached lower gear casing, and thus will only push / seat the lower drive shaft into the lower gear casing and also it will seat the swivel housing into the swivel bearing retainer and push the o ring there together which will provide a better seal.

Just a thought!

First off what kind of unit are you talking about???
Shimming the cover on a Mercruiser must be done with special tools or you will be buying a new upper soon. A bit more info and pics will help.J

hi. well i suppose i don't mean shimming as you do when you adjust the upper internal gears.... with a shim guage etc.
i mean there is a washer under the top cap which sets the height etc. And thus raise the whole lower section.
