Shims!

Hey Guys, I'm making progress on that old Bayliner Contessa (85) with the twin Volvo Penta 280 outdrives.

One seriously dumb question though. One of the 280 outdrives had to be disassembled to replace the verticle shaft. It hadn't been disassembled since it had been manufacturered in like 1985.

On that outdrive, the stainless steel shims were in bad shape and I think I need to replace them, but, out of curiousity, how critical are they? They're super thin, and some of them are defintely doubled up for some reason.

Re: Shims!

They are very critical for proper gear lash and tooth contact, and also bearing preload, they may look insignicant, but are some of the most important parts in your drives! Do not mix them up, and if you need to replace them, the old ones need to be measured with a micrometer, and same thickness ones ordered and installed EXACTLY where removed from, in a nutshell....

Uh oh.... I think I still have them, but I may have mixed them up from other parts of the drives. Am I in big trouble? Would the manual have something?

Re: Shims!

yer in trouble, but not the end of the world. ya just need to reshim as per the s/m that Don S posted up for ya... mercruiser shimming tools required..

i've only shimmed a little in one area for the repair i did (drive and driven gear in the upper). with the proper tool, it wasn't too bad to do.
be careful with your new shims. some of them are very thin.. can't remember is there was a .001'', but for sure there was a .002" very thin and likely easy to bend. + when adj. the stack. the very thin one would stick with gear lub to the thicker shims so well ya couldn't hardly even tell there were 2 shims... that's ALL i know about shimming. good luck and follow the s/m close.. word by word, sentence by sentence..

lol.

I would say shimming a volvo drive versus a mercruiser drive will definitely separate the boys from the girls.:p:D:facepalm:
