Re: Ship Master Controls

The Shipmaster controls are the Johnson version of a control box that was used from the fifties through at least the early 80s - I haven't actually looked to see when production for them ended. There is also an Evinrude version, which is called a "Simplex" control.

The earliest versions of the Shipmaster and Simplex controls, were smaller than the later versions and had rounded shoulders. The internal mechanics of them were also somewhat different. The later boxes were larger and rectangular in shape. Both the rounded type (older) and the first years of the rectangular type controls, used Type 400 cables. These are the ones with end fittings that are attached to the cable via set screws. Starting in 1979, the end fittings were press fit and were referred to as Type 479 cables. You can buy both, right here at iboats.

Be sure that you have the correct cables for the box that you have - they are not interchangeable. You may find a part number printed on the casing of your old cables, which you can use to order new ones. If not, the salesperson can help you determine the correct length for your boat.

both the older style and newer style, worked on the same principle. handle with teeth on the end that meshed with teeth on a slide bar, that move each cable.

Re: Ship Master Controls

Let's get this cleared up.

The ShipMaster came out in 1953. It had the rack gears inside, and round ball knobs. It uses the present-day type 400 cables availabe here at iboats

In 1962 it was redesigned to a square-cornered box with different shape handles, and the rack gear was gone. This style works much better than the rack gears. It still uses the Type 400 cables, but needs some little nylon spacers for the trunion on the control box end.

In 1979, it was changed again, but only internally, to accept the new Snap-in cables, also available here at iboats.
