Shop manual, points for early Merc 500

I'm looking for a Mercury shop manual for 61-64 Merc 500 and points also.

They are $80 from a dealer if you want a hard copy

Points are not too bad. Scour ebay and they pop up in the $50 range.

393-1504A is the P/N.. Quick search. These will probably end up in the $40 range most likely. No watchers right now. Mercury A 393 1504A5 6 Cyl Breaker Point Cam Wick Assembly Vintage | eBay

40-50 bucks for points is bad. $10-20 is acceptable. Like I said, NLA has you over a barrel.

I understand folks are cleaning them. I've worked on many cars, few outboards. Guess it was always my understanding there was some kind of coating and if you took it off the points wouldn't last long. That's what my dad told me anyway. Is it different with outboards?

How do folks clean them?

Item description says 6 cylinder, are points the same for the early 4 cylinders? I haven't had the distributor out yet. Is it keyed or do I need to be careful and mark things?

Original part # for the points in your 50 - 393-1504A6, original part # for points in the 6 cylinders, 393-1504A5. Both parts supersede to 393-1504A11. Based on that... They will most likely work....

Original part # for the points in your 50 - 393-1504A6, original part # for points in the 6 cylinders, 393-1504A5. Both parts supersede to 393-1504A11. Based on that... They will most likely work....

Yea, but Old Mercs wants $120 for a set of points. I'd rather shop around for the $30-40 deal

Actually the manual for '40-'65 is genuine Mercury Part # C-90-25500. and comes in a PDF on a CD. I took a chance on it because I found it was supposed to be OEM from Johns Old Mercury site, and it is. Saved me a lot of $$..

Would 393-1504a 10 work?

They superseed to A11, which is the last part number the old 4/6cyls used for the 'pre '67 motors.. Condensor crosses to Sierra 18-5169 and is available new. The Mercury condensor is still pretty easy to get ( may still be available ) 394-1130A1
