I'm in the market for a 40hp 4 stroke motor, I like the lighter weight of 2 stroke,
but I also like the less smoke/ better idle of the 4 stroke. The issue has always been
weight of 4 strokes, but now that I'm looking at the comparison, it seems Yamaha is
the lightest 4 stroke 40 hp out there: (With Tohatsu being a close second.)

It appears to me that Nissan and Yamaha 40 hp 4strokes are fairly light, compared
to the Evinrude and Suzuki.

4 STROKE OUTBOARD MOTORS - ALL 40 HP.
Tohatsu 40TLDI 206 Lbs with 20" shaft
Nissan 40A is 213 lbs with 20" shaft.
Yamaha F40 is 193 lb with a 20" shaft. ( 2 stroke is about 167 lbs )
Suzuki DF40 is 243 lbs with 20" shaft.
Mercury 40EFI is 216 lbs with ? shaft.
Evinrude E40 235 lbs with ? shaft. ( 2 Stroke )

Does this information seem correct ? Is there some 2 stroke direct injection system I should consider ? Do they idle like a 4 stroke for trolling ? What other critical differences should I look for ?

The Nissan and Tohastu are 2-stroke DFI engines and are identical. There isn't a 40 A model. They are all great engines quality wise. I like DFI's for their accelaration and better fuel consumption at higher speeds. But a lot of people like 4-strokes because they use less fuel at low speeds and are quieter.

Of course you need to look at the Evinrude e-tec.
Adjustable to troll very slowly.

The Evinrude E-tech is a tad heavy for a two stroke but look at the gear case and then compare it with the other tinker toys.

Ok, I see. The Tohatsu/Nissan 4 stroke is only 30 HP and it weighs around 159 Lbs. Still that is pretty light compared to the others.

Re: Shopping for a 40hp outboard

prg, I went through that same thought process 2-1/2 yrs ago. I bought the etec because of its low idle speed (600rpm) and is fuel injected. I can troll 16' alum. deep V at just over 1mph (GPS) all day.So far I have been very pleased. It shakes a tad below 800rpms but not badly. It does not smoke at all. Can't speak for any others.
btw the 40 50 & 60 are all the same motor.
Also has 7 yr warranty available. Good luck.
