The wiring harness for the power trim got pinched in the transom mount. When the trim motor was energized it shorted out and melted the wiring harness from the pinch point all the way to the trim relay. When the system was energized, it caused the engine to miss a bit but it kept running and we got back to the dock.
As a temporary fix to get through the day, I removed the damaged wire and spliced in new wiring. The trim motor works but only to lift, I had to drop the motor down using the manual bypass.
Now the LONG part of the story: the Yamaha F50 TLRD had been a flawless performer but AFTER the short in the trim motor it is hard to start, has a very high idle and runs rough at speed.
My original plan was to splice the trim harness using proper waterproof connectors and techniques (the splice will be well above the waterline) but I now have trim up ONLY and an engine issue to boot!
Any suggestions on a starting point in the troubleshoot would be appreciated!
THANKS IN ADVANCE for your help!
