Hello all,

Alpha One, Gen II
s/n OL705485

Something I have been hearing from the rear of the boat [because I don't know specifically where it is coming from] is a short grinding noise when I put the outdrive in gear. Forward is worse than reverse. The grinding noise only lasts a second and it doesn't always happen. When I put the control arm forward faster, no grinding; slower, grinding.

Cool? Or do I need to look at shift components soon? Thanks a bunch for the help.

jb

Its sounds pretty normal the dog that drives the forward and reverse gears has ramped teeth that lock into the gear when you shift

If you move slow they make noise FAST is what you should be doing :)

tommays

Yep, more like a clicking then the thump when it is finally engaged. So it sounds pretty normal and I'll take your advice and move the control arm a bit quicker in the future.

Thx, jb

Dead on 650, did the timing myself. I'm new to the I/O experience and I think the fact that I was shifting into gear too slow was the cause of the clackity clack, grrraaathump! sound. I'll keep an ear to it just to make sure it doesn't get worse.

Thanks for the advice y'all. I have another thread I'm starting about loose steering diagnosis and would very much appreciate any advice there as well.

Cheers, jb
