I'm a boat neophyte, so I have a mechanic. I haven't had the boat long and I've had the mechanic for even less time. I started a bellows job but couldn't complete the reassembly because of the difficulty I had with the exhaust bellows. He completed the job for me and did a bunch of stuff that I didn't/wouldn't/couldn't do on my own. Checking the alignment of the engine to the gimbal bearing for example. I just don't have the tool.
He said that putting the drive on was a nightmare because the spline shaft (he called it something else) was too short to fully engage the engine. He said it required two guys, one in the boat to hold the shaft straight so that it would go into the engine. He says "it is only engaged by an inch and a half or so." He says maybe somebody used a Chevy style instead of the right one.
1) I don't know what most of this means. 2) I've found that this guy is very... ummmm... sensitive, I guess, to doing the job right. For instance he complained when I went and picked up an automotive battery. He said it would be dead in a month. I told him it has a three year warranty, if it fails, I'll take it back!
It's an old boat and I'm in a confined lake area where if something went really wrong, I could get out and walk home. He thinks the splines will be fine. Does anyone else have an opinion or understand what has gone on here? Thanks in advance.
