I want to clear up something on whether my motor is long or short shaft. Now, from the bottom of the clamp to the AV plate is 17". From the clamp to another plate above the AV plate is 15". Do I have a short or long shaft?

I would call that a short shaft, CK1.

I never understood the 15 inch thing. My merc 9.8HP short shaft measures about 17.5 inches. My Evinrude 20HP short shaft measures about 17.8 inches. My Mcculloch 7.5HP measures 16 inches.

hystat, 15" is supposed to be the size of the transom. Build the transom to 15", hang brand X short shaft outboard on it and it should work. Most modern outboards try to keep as little of the lower unit beneath the bottom of the boat as possible to reduce drag, so all that's necessary to submerge them deep enough is to have the anti-ventilation plate in the water at speed.<br />That's not necessarily the case on older outboards or outboards where drag isn't a great concern. Like smaller outboards.
