short shaft long shaft

How do you determine if your engine is long shaft or short shaft. How about the transom, how do you know if you should have a short or long shaft? Finally, can you put a long shaft on a short shaft transom? I am not talking about a 40 hp on a 12 footer.

measure from top of transom, to keel 15 inch range is short shaft. 20 inch is long. motor measure from where it sits on transom, to the AV plate (flat plat just above prop) same measurements apply. not recommended to run long on short, to much motor in the water, producing drag, and poor performance.
