i know this pops up every other week but i have a bad lower unit in my 76 i think johnson, will confirm. I have found a compatible one on ebay, which is a short shaft, i have a long shaft. I know that you need to use the extension piece off mine the longer tube and driveshaft.

But the question i have, (i know how to do the rest b/c i have basically done it when replacing a water pump impellor) is does the drive shaft just pull out of the foot, and then the new one just slides in and line up the splines?

I'm sure that someone will help if you will tell us what motor you are working on.

On any motor switching between long and short units requires matching or extending the shift rod, watertubes, driveshaft and of course the housing. Most extensions also require some additional seals and connectors.

If you have all the extension parts of your old engine then the only thing you have to double check is whether the compatible one really is compatible and not a different gear ratio because of a different production year.Along with that you will have to count the splines and thickness of the new driveshaft.
If everything is the same you can pull one out and slide the other in.Of course after you have taken the water pump off.
